Sea Devils Drop Heartbreaker
The Cape Fear Community College Sea Devils fell in a heartbreaker to Brunswick, 66–64, Saturday afternoon in a game full of momentum swings and high-intensity play.
Cape Fear jumped out to a strong start, leading 25–10 after the first quarter behind crisp ball movement and aggressive scoring. The Sea Devils maintained control through the first half, taking a 37–25 lead into halftime. Cape Fear continued to extend its advantage early in the third quarter, holding a 55–49 edge heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter, however, belonged to Brunswick, which battled back with relentless energy and timely shooting. Despite Cape Fear's efforts to respond, the Sea Devils were unable to hold off the comeback and ultimately fell by two points.
Maggie Hawley stood out as a calming and steadying presence in the chaos. Her ability to knock down key shots, create opportunities for teammates, and make the right play under pressure continues to influence the team's overall approach. Kelize Velez-Galan also made an impact early, including a dramatic buzzer-beater just before the first quarter horn, which helped Cape Fear maintain its lead through the first half.
"This is one of those games we'll remember and learn from as the season goes on," Havens said. "The big takeaways really come down to decision-making and taking care of the basketball. Maggie showed how to stay calm under pressure, and that kind of leadership is starting to spread through the whole team."
The loss moves the Sea Devils to 10–4 overall. Cape Fear returns to action Friday at home against Cleveland Community College, with tipoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
