Women's Hoops Downs Guilford Tech
The Cape Fear Community College Sea Devils delivered a strong, connected performance Saturday afternoon, defeating Guilford Technical Community College 69–56 at the Schwartz Center.
Cape Fear set the tone early, opening the game with crisp ball movement and consistent defensive pressure. The Sea Devils jumped out to a 23–12 advantage after the first quarter and continued to control the pace in the second, taking a 41–24 lead into halftime. Their ability to share the basketball and get quality looks proved to be a difference throughout the afternoon.
Kelize Velez-Galan led the way offensively, scoring a game-high 23 points while knocking down five shots from beyond the arc. Monica Surratt followed with 17 points, repeatedly finishing through contact and getting to the free-throw line. The Sea Devils shot efficiently as a team, connecting on over 43 percent from the field and nearly 37 percent from three-point range, while also converting 18 free throws.
Defensively, Cape Fear stayed disciplined and active, forcing 23 turnovers and turning those opportunities into momentum-shifting possessions. Balanced contributions across the lineup allowed the Sea Devils to withstand Guilford's pushes in the second half and maintain control down the stretch.
"We played with great purpose and discipline today," head coach Felecity Havens said. "Our connectivity on both ends of the floor really stood out. When we share the basketball, stay locked in defensively, and remain committed to the details, this group shows just how good it can be. This was a strong example of the direction we're heading."
The win moves the Sea Devils to 9–4 overall and 7–4 in Region 10 play. Cape Fear returns to action Tuesday on the road at BCC, with tipoff set for 6:00 p.m.
