Sea Devils Fall at Gaston
Cape Fear Community College dropped a 118-94 road decision to Gaston College on February 21 at Ashbrook High School, as the home team's efficiency and rebounding proved too much to overcome.
Gaston came out sharp, building a 54-40 lead by halftime behind balanced scoring and control of the glass. Cape Fear shot nearly 39 percent from the field in the opening half and knocked down key perimeter shots to stay within striking distance. Still, Gaston's ability to convert at a high rate kept the Sea Devils from gaining sustained momentum.
The second half followed a similar script. Each time Cape Fear made a push, Gaston answered with timely buckets and trips to the free-throw line. The Sea Devils finished 11-of-29 from three-point range and 19-of-26 at the stripe, but Gaston's 52 percent shooting from the floor and 57-32 rebounding advantage ultimately created too many extra opportunities. The home team also capitalized at the foul line, converting 29-of-35 attempts.
Jadyn Cooper led Cape Fear with 18 points, attacking the rim and going 12-of-14 from the free-throw line. Javon Williams recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Trey Jones added 17 points and made 5 three-pointers. Greysen McCadden chipped in 16 points off the bench.
Despite solid individual performances, Gaston's depth and interior presence allowed the home side to control the tempo and extend the margin down the stretch.
The Sea Devils are back in action Wednesday night as Brunswick CC visits the Schwartz Center. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm.
