Sea Devils Drop Conference Opener
Wake Technical Community College spoiled a strong opening half by Cape Fear Community College, pulling away late for a 77–72 win Wednesday night at the Schwartz Center.
Cape Fear set the tone early, playing with pace and confidence on both ends. The Sea Devils controlled the opening stretch and built a lead that reached as many as 15 points midway through the first half. Their energy translated into a 39–31 advantage at the break, with Cape Fear defending well and pushing the tempo offensively.
The second half told a different story. Wake Tech steadily chipped away, capitalizing on turnovers and missed free throws as the Sea Devils struggled to maintain momentum. The visitors eventually took the lead and stretched it to double digits, forcing Cape Fear into catch-up mode for much of the final stretch.
Despite the setback, the Sea Devils showed resilience. Cape Fear battled back late, trimming the deficit and briefly reclaiming a one-point lead with under two minutes remaining. However, missed opportunities down the stretch proved costly, and Wake Tech closed out the game at the line to secure the win.
Jacob Daniels led Cape Fear with 13 points off the bench, while Jadyn Cooper added 12 points and nine rebounds. JJ Moore finished with a well-rounded performance, scoring 10 points while dishing out eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds.
After the game, head coach Mark Lane pointed to execution as the deciding factor. "We did a lot of good things early and played with great pace to build that lead," Lane said. "But turnovers and missed free throws allowed them to get back into the game."
The loss moves the Sea Devils to 6-4 on the year and 0-1 in Region 10 play. Cape Fear returns to action Saturday, as they travel to Petersburg, VA for a tilt with Richard Bland College. Game time is set for 3:00pm.
