Lori Drake returns to Cape Fear for her third season, sixth overall having spent the 2015-16 season as assistant coach at High Point University. During 2017-18 Drake led our lady Sea Devils to a 28-7 season. The lady Sea Devils were named regular season champs, finishing the Region 10 conference with an 21-1 record and conference tournament champions. The lady Sea Devils took a trip to the National Tournament in Harrison, Arkansas. Drake began her coaching career at CFCC in the team’s inaugural season in 2012. The Sea Devils women’s basketball program improved in wins each season under Drake’s leadership. In 2014-15, her third season at Cape Fear, Drake led the Sea Devils to a record of 26-7. That season, the Sea Devils finished with a No.12 national ranking. Drake’s tenure at Cape Fear is marked by several player successes and accolades; seven Sea Devil women’s basketball players earned first team all-region honors, while moving on a handful of players to the four year level.
During the 2015-16 season, Coach Drake helped guide High Point University to a 12-19 record. The Panthers reached the quarterfinals in the Big South Conference Tournament. Coach Drake played a vital role in player development and recruiting during her stint with HPU.
Coach Drake came to Cape Fear with an extensive background of not only playing at the collegiate and professional level, but also coaching, teaching and training top players and teams. Drake was invited to be a floor coach at the 2011 Hampton Girl's Basketball Nike Skills Academy, where she had an opportunity to work with some of the top trainers, coaches and legends of the game such as; Ganon Baker, Dee Brown, Nadine Domond, Diane Richardson, Micah Lancaster and Erica White. Coach Drake spent time as the Basketball Divisions Director, and Lead Skills Development Coach, for The Stronger Woman. During her stint overseas, she also started a Stronger Woman Showcase Team in Wilmington, NC where she helped six seniors continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level.
Prior to coaching, Lori Drake spent two years playing professionally in the United Kingdom. Coach Drake helped lead the Solent Suns to Final Four in the 2008-2009 season, where she averaged 19 ppg, and 8.5 rpg. That same season Lori was selected to play on the All-Star team for "The Rest of the World" vs. "England". Lori has had the opportunity to play in Luxembourg, Germany, Wales and the United Kingdom throughout her two years playing professionally. During her stint overseas, Drake was also the Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Chichester in the UK where she helped lead the team to their first cup game win in school history.
A graduate of UNCW, Drake capped off her college playing career for the Seahawks under Coach Ann Hancock. In her final season at UNCW, Drake was named to the all CAA team where she was the leading scorer, rebounder and team captain for the Seahawks. Coach Drake’s college career started at Seward County Community College, where she helped lead the Saints to a 32-5 season and final national ranking of #8.
Coach Drake currently resides in Wilmington, North Carolina.
