Sea Devils Roll Past SMC
Sit atop Region X Standings
Wilmington, N.C. – The Cape Fear Community College basketball team came into Saturday's game with Spartanburg Methodist in a dead lock for first place, but as the final horn sounded it was the Sea Devils who sat atop the Region X standings. Cape Fear sent Spartanburg home with their worst loss of the season, thumping SMC 86-54. “We knew this was a big game and we came out ready to play,” commented sophomore guard Keith Davis. “They are a great team but we know as long as we play together we can beat anyone.”
The victory is the 6th in a row for the Sea Devils who hold a one game lead over USC Salkehatchie in Region X standings. Cape Fear was paced by freshman Tavares Speaks, who poured in 21 points on 6 for 10 shooting. Fellow freshman Jordan Richardson provided CFCC with a huge lift as he controlled the paint dumping in 14 points. Vernon Payne rounded out the double digit scoring adding 11 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Cape Fear is back in action Wednesday as they head to Rock Hill, S.C. for a rematch with Clinton Junior College. CFCC defeated Clinton earlier this season in overtime and knows Clinton has revenge on their minds. “We know they are going to be ready to go,” said Hunter Matthews. “With as close as the standings are we can't take one night off, which should make for some great games to finish the season.” Tip off for the contest is slated for 7:00 p.m.
