Sea Devils Ink 5 Players to National Letter of Intents
New faces ready to make an immediate impact
Wilmington, N.C. - Head Coach Ryan Mantlo has announced the 2009-10 recruiting class. This season's recruiting class consists of Richard Shepherd, Vernon Payne, Jared Yeager, Tazmon Foster, Randell Jones and Matt Mullmann. They join an experienced Sea Devil squad primed to defend their Region X Championship. The Sea Devils return 12 players from last season's roster, including 3 from the starting line-up and 6 that red-shirted.
Richard Shepherd, who hails from Greenville, North Carolina dawns Sea Devil blue after spending his freshman season at Brunswick Community College. Shepherd, a 6'4” guard helped guide the Dolphins to a 28-5 record in 2007-08, tying the most wins in school history. He poured in 10.3 points per game, ranking 25th all time in single season scoring at Brunswick. His knack for making big plays and ability to shoot the ball from long range will provide the Sea Devils a great counter punch in their backcourt.
Vernon Payne, a 6'6”, 215lb. wing from Cape Fear High School brings his high flying aerobatics to the Schwartz Center. As a 2008 All-Cape Fear region selection, and Player of the Year in the Two Rivers Conference, Payne averaged 18.3 points per contest during his senior year. He brings an uncanny awareness on the floor and understands how to use his body against defenders. Once again teaming up with high school running mate Cephas Oglesby, their high flying slam dunks will have Sea Devil nation cheering all season long.
Tazmon Foster, a 6'0”, 200lb. point guard from Northern Vance High School looks to step in and solidify the backcourt. His athleticism and bull dog mentality will be a great fit at CFCC. He reunites with high school teammates Deltonio Moses and Nick Jefferson after averaging 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game last season at Northern Vance.
Jared Yeager, a 6'7”, 220lb. wing from New Hanover High School in Mechanicsville, Virginia rounds out this year's class that will play. This sharp shooting big has the ability to stretch the defense while also having the ability to post a smaller defender. During his senior campaign, Yeager averaged 12.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks.
Rounding out this year's signing class is Randell Jones, a 6'5”, 190lb. wing from Fayetteville Christian School. Jones will red-shirt next season. This lanky wing brings a total package to CFCC. His ability to play on the perimeter creates mismatches for opponents and Jones isn't afraid to expose them. Jones averaged 17.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest last season for the warriors. A season spent fine tuning every aspect of his game will prove to be crucial when he steps on the floor in the 2010-11 season.
“What a special group of young men,” commented Coach Mantlo. “Each player brings something unique to the table. I am positive they will carry themselves with a high level of integrity and leave a lasting legacy here at CFCC.”
