Athletic Department Holds Sixth Annual Athletic Banquet
Cape Fear Community College hosted the Sixth Annual Sea Devil Athletic Banquet on Thursday, April 23rd at the McKeithan Auditorium located at the North Campus.
Wilmington, N.C. – Cape Fear Community College hosted the Sixth Annual Sea Devil Athletic Banquet on Thursday, April 23rd at the McKeithan Auditorium located at the North Campus. The men's basketball, men's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, women's volleyball and the cheerleading teams were all honored at the event.
Men's basketball celebrated their successful 2008-09 season with three members making the all-region team. Cephas Oglesby, David Best, and Charles Baker were voted to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team's respectively. Various team awards were also handed out including Charlton Conner receiving Most Improved and Alec Schmitt was awarded the Coach's Award. Cephas Oglesby took home the final piece of hardware as he was voted the Most Valuable Player. This year's Sea Devil squad won the Region X Tournament and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson Kansas for the first time in school history.
Men's soccer showcased seven all-region performers as well as the player of the year. Five players were named to the 1st team including Kyle Hoard, Vieux Sarr (NSCAA All Region), Nick Degrassi, Kimball Webster (NSCAA All Region),and Eddie West (NSCAA All Region). Lester Martorell and Tyler Sosa were both named to the 2nd team while Eddie West also took home the honors of NJCAA All-American, NSCAA All-American, and Region X player of the year. Freshman Kimball Webster was named Most Valuable Player and Sarr earned the Coach's Award. The Most Improved recipient was Roberto Perez. The men's soccer team won the conference tournament this season defeating Tri-County in penalty kicks the championship game, notching another first for Sea Devil Athletics.
Landon Pearson and Brian Phaup earned Region X honors after leading the men's golf team to a 3rd place finish at the 2009 Region X Golf Championship. Pearson was also named the team's Most Valuable Player while freshman Brian Phaup took home the Coach's Award. Sophomore Justin Riker earned Most Improved.
Claiming a runner up spot in both the regular season and conference tournament the Lady Sea Devils had reason to celebrate. With four freshmen returning the future is bright for Cape Far volleyball. Sarah Bower, Ashley Maher, and Hannah Doody were named all-region. Bower, along with Kim Young, earned all-tournament honors. This season's Most Valuable Player was Ashley Maher and Coach's Award went to Lindsey Gurley. The Most Improved award was collected by Sarah Bower.
For the 3rd straight season women's soccer took home the Region X Tournament and played host to the District Tournament at the beautiful north campus. Seven players were selected to this year's all-region team including three to the 1st team, Ashli Flowers, Stacy Herrera and Sarah Sallenger. Joelle Humphrey, Casey Naylor, and Kathryn Lail were all named to the 2nd team while goal-keeper Becca Knott netted Honorable Mention. Kasie Drake earned this year's Coach's Award and Brittany Scott received Most Improved. This year's Most Valuable Player was Sarah Sallenger. Three coaches also received honors for the night. Men's Soccer Head Coach Robert McGee and Women's Soccer Head Coach Chris Libert were named Region X Coach of the Year for their respective sports. Men's Basketball Head Coach Ryan Mantlo was named District 10 Coach of the Year.
The annual “Sea Devil Award”, which was implemented to thank an individual that goes above and beyond the call of duty within the Athletic Department, was given to a dedicated fan, friend and sponsor. Dianne Jones, a member of Student Development, was honored with the 2008-09 Sea Devil Award for her support throughout the year.
